SYNOD CONVENTION
“Washed in the Water: Living In Your Baptism”, the 21st Annual Women of the ELCA Synodical Convention will be Saturday, September 13, at Covenant Lutheran Church, just off Barker Cypress Road in Houston. Pastor Kerry Nelson, pastor at Covenant, will be the guest speaker. Everyone is invited to bring two ounces of water to be poured into the baptismal font in remembrance of your baptism. A variety of workshops will be offered during the day-long event. Betty Feldmann will serve as our delegate. It’s not too late to join Betty, Janice Fairlie, Benita Schramme, and Pat Schroeder in attending the convention. A late registration fee of $55 now applies. If you’re interested in going, please pick up a registration form from the WELCA bulletin board in the annex, and let Pat know of your intention to attend as soon as possible.
FALL GENERAL MEETING & ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Be sure to clear your calendar to attend the next business meeting of our women’s group scheduled for Sunday, September 28, at 2:30 pm. We will conduct a short business meeting to elect officers for 2009 and discuss the WELCA events scheduled for the remainder of the year, i.e. Blood Drive, Thankoffering service, and decorating for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Following the business meeting, the Rebecca Circle will host a fun afternoon of games and fellowship, topped off with ice cream floats! If you’ve missed the past couple of years of the ladies’ games night, you’ve missed out on a lot of fun and laughter. Don’t be left out this year!!
OFFICER ELECTIONS
It’s that time of year again when we start our search for officers to lead our women’s organization for the next two years. At our Fall General Meeting, we will elect persons to fill the positions of President-Elect (one-year term, followed by one-year term as President), Treasurer (two-year term), and Mission Action (two-year term). They will join Janice Fairlie as President, and other current board members who are entering the final year of their term, Secretary Esther Klatte, Mission Growth Glenda Stegent, and Mission Community Deanna Giese. If you would be interested in serving in this capacity, please contact Pat Schroeder. You will personally reap many blessings as you serve others. Please prayerfully consider saying “yes” to the call.
Circle Convenors, please also elect one of your members to serve as Circle Convenor for 2009 at your September or October meeting. When you have done so, please let Janice Fairlie know who the Convenor will be for next year.
MISSION GROWTH
A new Bible study series begins with the September issue of Lutheran Woman Today. “The Hidden Hand of God: Wisdom Stories from Ruth, Daniel, and Esther” focuses on our call to discipleship in the complexity of today’s world. You will see three recurring “H” themes throughout the study. “Hesed” is a Hebrew word meaning extravagant loving loyalty that goes beyond the expected. “Heroic actions” involve great risks to the one performing them. The “hidden hand” refers to the often-unseen presence of God in the three books of the Bible we will be studying. As we study these books together, we pray that we will grow in confidence of God’s never-ending love for us and that we gain courage to take the risks God may be calling us to. Leaders Guides are available and are located at the mailbox area. Look for one with your Circle name on it.
Glenda will soon begin work on next year’s yearbook, and asks that each Circle Convenor turn in her Circle’s roster and 2009 schedule by November 1. Please make the changes and/or any corrections to a copy of the roster and schedule in this year's yearbook, and place in the WELCA mailbox at the church. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Glenda.
MISSION COMMUNITY
The quilters met on August 19th for quilting and tacking Lutheran World Relief quilts. Ten members were present, and they produced twelve tacked quilts. Lydia Rust and Dorothy Wiesepape provided refreshments for all. The next workday will be on September 16th. Deanna Giese will provide refreshments.
If you are collecting aluminum tabs for the Dialysis Project, now is a good time to bring them to the church annex and deposit them in the jars provided. The tabs will be delivered to the Dialysis Center in October.
